I don't always agree with Ray Thomas, but this seems on target to me:
UNCALLED FOR: I don't watch hockey. Not because of the
violence, just because I don't like hockey. I don't
watch baseball, basketball and football for the same
reason. But the "sneak up from behind" hit by Todd
Bertuzzi on Avalanche's Steve Moore was way over the
top. I heard one man say that to prosecute Bertuzzi
for it "would change hockey as we know it." Maybe it
NEEDS "changing as we know it" if such a damaging
"sneak up from behind hit" that might paralyze or kill
this man is "allowed." Bertuzzi ought to be prosecuted
to the limit of the law and imprisoned for a long
time, his hockey career ended as he has probably ended
Moore's career Then he ought to be sued for millions
of dollars for the money he's going to cost Moore and
the pain and suffering Moore's going to go through
because of this cowardly "cheap shot." Yes, violence
is part of the game. It shouldn't be, but it is, but
Bertuzzi just went too far and needs to be severely
punished for it. If it had happened anywhere but the
hockey rink, Bertuzzi would already be in jail and
there'd be no question about prosecution for felony
assault at the least, and attempted murder if
possible. Bertuzzi is a menace and ought to be removed
from society.
