Toward the end of his speech, [Barney] Frank uttered a sentence one can hardly imagine coming from the mouth of a 21st-century American politician. "Our problem today," he said, "is too little government."

His proposal is to tax some of the wealth the private sector is now producing so abundantly -- "a fairly small percentage," he said, without being specific -- "and use it to employ people on socially useful purposes."

As Frank acknowledged, this whole approach smacks "to some extent [of] the New Deal philosophy." And that is why no one, including the Democratic presidential candidate, is likely to endorse it wholesale.

This is typical Barney. If the American Socialist Party could have gotten him elected, he wouldn't be a Democrat.

I wasn't aware that there was a party more socialist than the Democratic Party.

This guy has served TWELVE terms! And now he's being called a "bold thinker". Apparently they like socialism up there in Mass.

It was a speech he made on March 4. Then he was interviewed by David S. Broder of the Washington Post on Thursday, March 11.

Massachusetts Congressman, being hailed as a "bold thinker" among Democrats. <gag>

Politics have always frustrated me. With the two party system, you can either choose the Republicans, who favor small government but tend to be bigots and warhawks, or the Democrats, who are more fair about civil rights, but are wishy-washy and favor a clunky big government. Then there are the minor parties that are attractive, but you know they'll never win the election.

It usually comes down to voting for the lesser of two evils, and I am always confused with which of the two is the lesser. Right now I'm sticking with the Democrats because at least they aren't trying to ban gay marriage.

What makes you think Republicans favor small government? And who says Democrats are more fair about civil rights? They're all socialists to some extent, and what politicians generally want is more power for politicians.

A minor party candidate could win an election if everyone who says they can't would just go vote for them. ;-)

I wouldn't waste my vote on a Democrat just based on the gay marriage issue. For one thing, they rarely do what they promise once they are actually elected. For another thing, I think there are better ways to beat the marriage issue. And it really comes down to one's philosophy. I don't think any of the Democratic candidates really care about gay marriage, they only care about beating Bush.
